We at EPIC LINEN believe that the path to a greener future starts here
Linen is one of the best fabrics you can use in your daily life for a better, greener future. When you choose linen, you choose sustainability, always.
Resilient flax plant
Linen is made from flax plants.
Flax plants are resilient, they grow without the need for fertilizers or pesticides. It's a renewable resource that's produced without damaging the environment.
It's also one of the reasons why linen is so much better than cotton - one of the most chemically intensive crops on the planet.
Counteracts soil depletion
Flax is also a break crop - it can improve the overall soil quality of land, allowing subsequent crops to thrive in the rejuvenated soil. Which is a huge deal considering how prevalent soil depletion is becoming.
Minimal water consumption
Flax requires very little or no additional water to grow, other than rainwater.
According to the European Confederation of Linen and Hemp, only 6.4 liters of water are needed to produce a linen shirt - compared to 2700 liters for a non-organic cotton shirt.
Positive environmental effects
According to The Advisory Commission Report to the European Parliament, flax cultivation has positive effects on eco-system diversity as it allows for an “environmental pause”.One hectare of flax can take 3.7 tonnes of CO2 out of the atmosphere. That means from all the linen grown in Europe alone, around 250,000 tonnes of CO2 is removed each year!
A key reason why linen is a sustainable fabric is that the entire flax plant can be woven into a fibre. There's almost no waste left over from the spinning and weaving process.
Biodegradable and recyclable
Natural, undyed linen is 100% biodegradable and recyclable.
When left in the soil, pure, natural linen can start to decompose in just 2 weeks.
Linen as a fabric is incredibly strong and durable! Linen apparel and home linen are made to last and will stay in good shape for a long time, instead of ending up in a landfill and being frequently replaced by new purchases.
Epic Linen ethos
Some of the ways we operate as a business to stay eco-friendly:
- we only use carefully selected, organic European-grown flax, which is Oeko-Tex certified
- non-linen additions are as natural as possible, just like our natural coconut buttons
